In support of the Asian American Community

On March 16, 2021, we were confronted with another act of horrific violence in our society. This time, after witnessing an alarming increase in the numbers of attacks on Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) people during the pandemic, we learned about the brutal, hate-based murder of eight people in Atlanta, six of whom were women of Asian descent.
In the Libraries, we recognize that these acts of racial- and gender-based violence against the AAPI community stem from a long history of White supremacist ideologies, scapegoating, and xenophobia in the United States. These acts of hate are symptoms of a larger problem wherein Asian American people, and especially Asian American women, are devalued and dehumanized.
We reaffirm our commitment to anti-racism and social justice, especially as we join in solidarity with all members of the AAPI community to condemn anti-Asian hate and violence. We encourage everyone to read, learn, and take action with resources from our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility Research Guide. To all those experiencing sadness, anger, and fear over this latest tragedy, we hope you will find strength in the growing anti-racist community here on the UMD campus and that you will join together to counter racism, sexism, and violence in our world.
