Changes to UMD Libraries’ MakerSpace Programs starting Fall 2021

MakerSpace technologies will be available in STEM Library.

Beginning this fall semester, the John and Stella Graves Makerspace (JSGM), currently located in the Terrapin Learning Commons on the second floor of McKeldin Library will merge with the makerspace in STEM Library to make more effective and efficient use of Library resources.

The Makerspace at STEM Library opens for the Fall 2021 semester on August 23, 2021.

Consolidation of makerspace programs, resources, and technologies at McKeldin Library with those of the STEM Makerspace is currently underway. The FAQs below provide answers to some of the questions library users might have about the merger and will be updated as new information becomes available.

If you have a question about a service not addressed in this FAQ or a general question about the STEM Makerspace, please email lib-makerspace@umd.edu.

Facilities at the STEM Library provide a better environment for Makerspace operations and a more prominent location within the Libraries. Refocusing and streamlining the Libraries’ Makerspace program will also make more efficient and effective use of the Libraries’ fiscal and human resources.

The makerspace in McKeldin is closed for the Fall 2021 semester while the transition is in process. The makerspace at STEM Library will be open with normal operations during the transition.

We are currently evaluating what equipment, services, and programs can be relocated to the STEM Library to best meet the needs of our users. We anticipate the transition will be complete by Spring 2022.

The Makerspace in the STEM Library is open to all UMD students, faculty, and staff. Training is needed to use some makerspace equipment.
