Dear UMD students, faculty, and community members,

Welcome back, Terps! I hope you and your loved ones have been safe and well during this unprecedented time. Throughout the summer, we in the Libraries have continued to provide online services, teaching, and 24/7 access to our vast digital resources for your research and studies. We are currently in Phase 2 of our reopening plan, which provides “curbside pickup” services for access to our physical collections. (See the chart below for a concise summary of the Libraries’ reopening plan.)

As we begin the fall semester, we plan to move the Libraries’ operations to Phase 3, which provides limited access to McKeldin Library, on Monday, September 14, 2020. This date is in alignment with the University’s return to in-person instruction and takes advantage of the University’s enhanced facilities cleaning and maintenance protocols, COVID-19 testing, and policies related to physical distancing, masks, and de-densification of spaces. Phase 3 provides limited, reservations-based access to McKeldin’s 1st floor study spaces for UMD students, faculty, and staff, and offers appointment-based access to our special collections and archives in Hornbake Library. Curbside pickup services will continue to provide access to materials from our general collections. (See our Library Services During the Pandemic web page, for more details.)

While we wish we could restore all of our normal operations, we want to keep everyone as safe as possible, including the Libraries' staff, faculty, and student employees, and we believe that a gradual implementation of Phase 3 will help us do that. Our intention is to monitor how the situation evolves and carefully expand access to more spaces and services as conditions allow.

Best wishes to you for a successful semester and please remember that we are here for you online via chat, virtual consultations, and more, even if access to our physical spaces is limited at this time.

Warm regards,
Adriene Lim
Dean of Libraries
