Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM)

The Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM) is the digital archive for collecting, preserving, and providing access to works produced by university research. It is supported and developed by Digital Services and Technologies in the University of Maryland Libraries. There is no fee for using DRUM. To submit an item to DRUM, login using your UMD credentials. The plus sign on the left side of the screen will open a menu where you can select New > Item to open the item submission form.

Why Deposit in DRUM?

Increase the visibility and impact of your research

You can use DRUM to share your work with researchers around the world. All content in DRUM is indexed in Google and Google Scholar for high visibility, and you receive a permanent DOI for each submission. Colleagues and other researchers can use the DOI to cite your work.

By depositing your work in DRUM, you make it easy for researchers, students, policymakers, and journalists to reference, replicate, and re-use your work. Review our short guidelines for submitting your research to DRUM.

Preserve your work for the long term

You can use DRUM to ensure the long-term preservation of your research products. The University Libraries intend to preserve all your submissions indefinitely, and we’ll maintain your material even if you leave the university.

DRUM is built on DSpace software, a widely used, reliable digital repository platform. DRUM performs nightly bit-level integrity tests on all files. DRUM conforms to the digital preservation principles outlined in the University of Maryland Libraries’ Digital Preservation Policy.

The University of Maryland Libraries reserve the right to migrate your materials to new file formats to reduce the risk of technological obsolescence. However, we cannot guarantee that we will migrate any or all materials in the repository.

Satisfy data management or data sharing requirements

You can use DRUM to satisfy data management or data sharing requirements from the NSF, NIH, and other funding agencies or publishers. If you’re writing a data management or data sharing plan, you can name DRUM as your method of sharing and preserving your data, code, documentation, and related materials.

Retain all your copyrights

When you submit items to DRUM, you agree to the DRUM license and grant the University of Maryland a non-exclusive right to retain, preserve, and provide access to your material. The term "non-exclusive" means that you retain all copyright to your work. You can still enter into agreements with other organizations (such as publishers) granting them rights to use your material.

If you need to remove items from DRUM because of a copyright agreement with another entity, please contact drum-help@umd.edu.

Submitting items published elsewhere

You can submit items that have been published or presented in other venues. However, if you transferred all rights to the publisher, you may need their permission to submit the items to DRUM. Review your agreement with the publisher. For more information about copyright agreements, please see our guide to author rights.

Monitor your impact

To help you monitor your impact, DRUM provides information about downloads of your research. You can track the total downloads of each file.
