UMD Libraries’ Archivist Appointed to MD Two Fifty Commission
Dr. Joni Floyd joins statewide effort to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, honor Maryland’s contributions

The UMD Libraries are proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Joni Floyd to the Maryland 250 Commission, a statewide body established to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary and honor Maryland’s pivotal contributions to its founding and legacy. As the Curator for Maryland and Historical Collections in the University of Maryland Libraries’ Special Collections and University Archives, Dr. Floyd brings a public history perspective grounded in community engagement and inclusive storytelling.
Appointed by Adrienne Jones, Speaker of the Maryland House of Delegates, Dr. Floyd is one of 32 commissioners representing a wide range of expertise across history, education, culture, and civic engagement. In her role, she will help shape commemorative activities that reflect Maryland’s diverse experiences and contributions to the nation’s founding and evolution.
In a recent interview with the MD Two Fifty Commission, Dr. Floyd shared her belief that the semiquincentennial festivities are an opportunity for Maryland citizens to document the history of their communities, highlight unsung heroes that made a difference in their lives, and share their stories across the state.
"I’m proud to serve on the MD Two Fifty Commission and represent the University of Maryland Libraries. I want to remind all Marylanders that the UMD Libraries are here for you and that our special collections are open to everyone,” says Dr. Floyd. “I invite the public to engage with the spirit of this commemoration by exploring the Libraries’ rich collection of historic Maryland newspapers and genealogical records to deepen their understanding and appreciation of our collective history.”
Her involvement in the MD Two Fifty Commission ensures that the Libraries’ values of access, equity, and historical integrity are part of this landmark celebration.
