The Dirty Details of McKeldin’s Trash

Full-body plastic suits were available. “If you feel like you’re going to be grossed out by any of the liquids, put one of these on,” warned Jessica Janney ’25, a recycling coordinator with UMD’s Facilities Management. On top of a long row of plastic tables, heaping garbage bags oozed, their dripping residue collecting on black tarps laid out on the ground. Smells, all of them unpleasant, wafted through the springtime air.

UMD Libraries, Big Ten Academic Alliance finalize contract with Springer extending access for faculty, staff, and students

The University of Maryland Libraries are pleased to announce that we have signed a two-year, cost neutral contract with Springer in collaboration with the BTAA. The agreement extends our existing access to Springer journals and adds an Open Access (OA) publishing component without fees or caps. UMD corresponding authors, including graduate students, can publish their research as OA articles in Springer hybrid journals including Adis, Palgrave Macmillan, and Academic hybrid journals on Nature.com.

The Kohli Foundation for Sociology has announced that SocArXiv is the winner of its 2025 Infrastructure Prize for Sociology. This honor especially recognizes the leadership of SocArXiv founder Professor Philip N. Cohen of the Department of Sociology.

UMD Libraries hosts “Living Memory: Honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives” an Indigenous Futures Lab Pop-Up exhibition in McKeldin Library

On May 5, 2025, in honor of the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR),  the Living Memory: Honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives installation will open in the Portico Room on the second floor of McKeldin Library. The exhibition was curated by Britney Bibeault, Assistant Director, Indigenous Futures Lab (IFL) and PhD candidate, Information Studies

UMD Libraries announce recipients of the 2025 Library Awards for Undergraduate Research and the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Award

The University of Maryland Libraries are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2025 Library Awards for Undergraduate Research. This year’s IDEA Award recipient is Sylvia Cotten, class of 2025, majoring in History. The three Undergraduate Research prizes have been awarded to Taylor Mason, class of 2025, majoring in History; Holland Schmitz, class of 2025, majoring in History; and Matthew Zinno class of 2027, majoring in Government and Politics.

Student Research Team that Creates Visual Tracking Software to Study Fish Wins UMD Libraries’ 2025 Gemstone Research Award

Team FSH edged out Teams HEMD and Valve to clinch the UMD Libraries’ Gemstone Research Award at the finalists presentations on March 26, where each team presented their research to a panel of judges. UMD Libraries awarded a first place prize of $2,000 and a $1,000 prize to both runners up. The Gemstone Research Award recognizes student teams that demonstrate excellence in the integration of principles of information literacy into their work and who conduct research with integrity and diligence.

Libraries Performing System Maintenance to Improve Security and Reliability

Between now and June, the Libraries will be performing system maintenance on the underlying infrastructure that powers our applications and services. This work is critical to the modernization of the Libraries’ digital infrastructure, resulting in improved security and reliability of library services.During this time, the following library applications and services will be unavailable for specified periods of time: interlibrary loan, course reserves, streaming media services, the Libraries’ website, DRUM, digital collections, and off-campus access to online resources.

UMD Libraries Announce Gift of 150-Year-Old Printing Presses

The University of Maryland Libraries are excited to announce the acquisition of two 19th-century iron Washington hand presses donated to Special Collections and University Archives by Christopher and Patricia Manson of Rockville, MD and Ellie Denker of Potomac, MD. These gifts will be the foundation for a new letterpress printing studio on the ground floor of Hornbake Library, set to open in 2025.

Generative AI tool fully integrated into Scopus database, available via UMD Libraries

Scopus AI is now fully integrated into the Scopus interface, and accessible via the Libraries’ Database Finder tool.Scopus AI uses generative AI to respond to natural language queries to help researchers navigate the vast amount of information available in Scopus by generating easy-to-understand summaries and concept maps.
