ALTR stands for Accessible Library Text Retrieval. It’s a new service offered by the University Libraries’ Resource Sharing & Reserves unit in partnership with the Counseling Center’s Disability Support Service (DSS). ALTR provides text-searchable PDFs of eligible library books that are still under copyright to UMD users with print disabilities. The book must be owned by the UMD Libraries (now or in the past), and a digital version must reside in the HathiTrust Digital Library.
During the DSS Intake interview, a DSS counselor will determine eligibility for ALTR. Based upon this meeting and supporting documentation, DSS creates an “accommodation letter.” ALTR is now one of the official accommodations that could be listed on this letter.
