UMD Libraries Community Borrowers and Community Researchers Programs

Eligibility

The UMD Libraries may grant membership into the Community Borrower or Research Programs that allow limited borrowing privileges. Note that all categories require an appropriate photo ID, local mailing address, and an email address. To apply, please fill out the Community Borrowers and Researchers Form.

Lifetime alumni members who purchased their membership before April 1, 2012, will continue to receive free borrowing privileges, but will be asked to renew their Community Borrower membership every five years. To renew your membership, please fill out the Community Borrowers and Researchers Form.

You need to be at least 18 years old and provide an acceptable photo ID, local mailing address, and an email address. A check or credit card are required for payment. The Libraries do not accept cash or money orders.

Acceptable photo IDs:

  • Valid Driver's License w/ photo
  • Valid State ID w/ photo
  • Valid Passport w/ photo
  • Valid U. S. Military ID Card w/ photo
  • School ID w/ photo
  • Employee ID w/ photo

The ID must have a unique identifier number (an ID or license number assigned by the state, school, or organization).

  • Community Borrowers: See Community Borrowers for information on privileges. Open to members of the Maryland community and out-of-state patrons. Membership duration: one year (365 days). See fees below.
  • Community Researchers: See Community Researchers for information on privileges. Open to members of the Maryland community. Membership duration: one year (365 days). See fees below.
  • Government employees from NASA Goddard, NOAA, and FDA, with appropriate ID:  Free membership in the Community Borrowers program. Membership duration: one year (365 days)
  • UMD Employee Designees & Fellow Designees: See UMD Employee Designees Privileges for more information on privileges. Membership duration: one year (365 days); eligible for renewal as long as the designee renews their status with UHR.
  • Big Ten Library Users, with appropriate ID: See Big Ten Reciprocal Borrowing for more information on membership, identification, and library access. Membership duration: one year (365 days).
  • SHARES Library Users, with appropriate ID: See SHARES Reciprocal Borrowing for more information on membership, identification, and library access. Membership duration: one year (365 days).
  • CIRLA Users (Graduate Students or Faculty only): See CIRLA Reciprocal Borrowing for more information on privileges and the application process. Membership duration: one year or the expiration date of the CIRLA form, whichever expires first.
  • Faculty from an OCLC Reciprocal Borrowing Institution: See OCLC Reciprocal Borrowing for registration information.

Library users can become Community Borrowers for one of the following fees:

  • CIRLA, OCLC, NASA, NOAA, FDA, SHARES or Big Ten (with identification): No Cost
  • Current members of the UMD Alumni Association or Friends of the Libraries: $25 per year for any member, regardless of residency.
  • State of Maryland residents (with acceptable photo ID): $50 per year
  • Out-of-State residents: $100 per year

Library users (who do not belong to the Big Ten) may become Community Researchers for the following fee:

  • Employee Designees (with registration with UHR): No Cost
  • State of Maryland residents (with acceptable ID): $100 per year

Note: Community Researcher status is not available to out-of-state patrons (except Big Ten Members) and there are no discounts.

Membership is issued for a maximum of one year at a time. To apply, please fill out the Community Borrowers and Researchers Form.

Membership in the Community Borrowers Program permits you:

  • to borrow material from all libraries at the University of Maryland's College Park campus, Shady Grove campus, and Severn Library
  • a 30-day loan period in most cases; all loans are subject to recall
  • to have a maximum of 25 items checked out at any one time
  • one renewal for each item, unless it has been recalled
  • book paging that allows requests for items from any branch to be delivered to any other branch, or to request an item from the shelves to be delivered to the Library Services Desk

Membership in the Community Researchers Program permits you:

  •  to borrow material from all libraries at the University of Maryland's College Park campus, Shady Grove campus, and Severn Library
  • a 56-day loan period in most cases; all loans are subject to recall
  • to have a maximum of 100 items checked out at any one time
  • two renewals for each item, unless it has been recalled
  • book paging that allows requests for items from any branch to be delivered to any other branch, or to request an item from the shelves to be delivered to the Library Services Desk

What is not included:

  • Interlibrary Loan
  • Remote access to databases that are restricted to UMD faculty and students
  • Recall services for UMD materials checked out by other users
  • Borrowing materials from any other USMAI library
  • Late Night Study in McKeldin Library
  • Reserved Study Carrels

Note: The Libraries reserve the right to withdraw or block Community Borrowers or Researchers loan privileges for overdue or recalled items that are not returned and for library fines that are not paid in a timely fashion. Community Borrowers and Researchers are subject to overdue and recall fines. Information about these fines are found on our Billing webpage.

You must present the appropriate photo ID and any required documentation (as indicated above) at the 1st floor Library Services Desk, McKeldin Library, after completing the Community Borrowers and Researchers Form.

Note: Community Borrower Card pick up and processing ends 30 minutes prior to closing
