New Library System and Search Experience Coming Soon

What’s happening?

The University of Maryland Libraries is implementing a new and improved catalog and integrated library system (ILS) that will launch at the start of the summer semester. Students and faculty will benefit from a new interface that streamlines and enhances the process of searching and accessing University of Maryland library collections, replacing the Classic Catalog and WorldCat UMD.

Timeline & Key Dates

Spring 2024

Preparation for implementation underway with no noticeable impact on users.

April 1, 2024

Last day to place orders for library materials.  Purchasing will not resume until sometime in the new fiscal year (after July 1, 2024).  We will share more specific dates about resumption of purchasing as information becomes available.

May 2024

Migration will be occurring behind the scenes. This phase will mostly be invisible to users. While we don't expect the migration to impact e-resources (e.g., online databases, e-journals, etc.), we may be limited in our ability to troubleshoot and correct access issues during this period. Interlibrary Loan and your subject librarians can help find workarounds for any unavailable resources during this time.

May 20-24, 2024 (intersession week)

No borrowing or hold requests will be available during this time, as data is migrated from the old system to the new one. Some other systems may be unavailable. More details will be shared closer to the date.

May 28, 2024 (first day of Summer Sessions)

New search tool and library system in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

We strive to provide user-centered programs and services that make it as easy as possible to access the knowledge, collections, and resources entrusted to us. The new system will improve search, retrieval of information, and access to knowledge within our communities and will facilitate the enhanced integration of services across University System of Maryland institutions and affiliated member libraries.

The current system, Aleph, has been in place since 2003. The vendor of that system is no longer developing it and it is not the focus of their innovation efforts. The University System of Maryland & Affiliated Institutions went through a bidding process to identify a vendor for a new system that would best fit the needs of library staff and users. The new interface will provide a similar single search box interface that will be similar to WorldCat UMD’s, with additional options for customization.

You (and we) will need to adapt your library research approaches to using the new interface. Faculty, in particular, are urged to get familiar with the new system as early as possible to avoid additional stress when preparing for Fall 2024 courses. Students taking classes in Summer 2024 will need to use the new system that will be in place at the beginning of Summer Session I. We recommend working with your subject librarian during this time of transition with any questions you may have (and it will be a new system for us too!) Although the new system is rather intuitive and user friendly, UMD library staff are here to help make the transition as smooth as possible. Your library account information will transfer over but there will be a new online interface for viewing your account.

Ask Us, Database Finder, Research Guides, Search All, course reserves in ELMS (streaming and electronic), space reservations, Digital Collections, Archival Collections Database, your library account information.

Watch this space for more updates as they become available. UMD librarians are working on an online guide that will explain how the new system works.
