The University of Maryland Libraries has adopted a set of core licensing principles to guide negotiations with scholarly publishers and other vendors. The principles support the mission, vision, and values of the University and of the Libraries.

University of Maryland Libraries mourns the sudden and tragic passing of labor leader and former AFL-CIO President, Richard Trumka. From his early days as a rank and file coal miner in Western Pennsylvania to President of the United Mineworkers of America, and then President of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka dedicated his entire life to the working class.

During their November 5 meeting, the Graduate Student Government (GSG) passed a resolution officially endorsing the proposed policy on equitable access to scholarly research put forth by the University of Maryland Publishing, Access and Contract Terms (UMD PACT) group.

The UMD Libraries WikiProject, an effort to link data to related content from the Libraries’ archival collections, has surpassed editing its 1000th item on Wikidata. These valuable resources are now more discoverable by scholars across the globe.

Beginning this fall semester, the John and Stella Graves Makerspace (JSGM), currently located in the Terrapin Learning Commons on the second floor of McKeldin Library will merge with the makerspace in STEM Library to make more effective and efficient use of Library resources. The Makerspace at STEM Library opens for the Fall 2021 semester on August 23, 2021.

Section body - TOME@UMD, a two-year pilot program of the national TOME initiative, is now accepting applications for three grants of up to $15,000 each that will sponsor the publication of open access, digital monographs by UMD faculty members. With a deadline of November 15, 2021, the process calls for applications from eligible faculty in all disciplines, but with preference given for those in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. 

The partnership offers UMD researchers a new portal to manage projects and collaborate across institutions.

To meet the growing demand for streaming media in education and research, colleagues at the University of Maryland Libraries have implemented a number of new initiatives to enhance their understanding about the educational need for streaming media and improve related infrastructure and services.

The Big Ten Academic Alliance and the University of Michigan Press have signed a three-year agreement that provides multi-year support for Fund to Mission from all fifteen member libraries. Fund to Mission is the Press’s open access monograph model that aligns with its mission and commitment to equity, justice, inclusion, and accessibility. The model demonstrates a return to the origins of the university press movement and moves toward a more open, sustainable infrastructure for the humanities and social sciences.
