Literary Special Collections
Literary collections in Special Collections and University Archives include both book and manuscript holdings that document the lives and work of significant literary figures, with a focus on 20th century British and American Literature, as well as Maryland literary figures and publishing.
Manuscript collections consist of correspondence, papers relating to published and unpublished literary works, publications, photographs, and memorabilia. The papers of American writers Katherine Anne Porter and Djuna Barnes are among the significant literary archival holdings in Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Maryland. Additional literary collections encompass T.S. Eliot, Thom Gunn, and literary first appearances of authors and poets.
Book collections feature unique editions and comprehensive collections of modern literary works. Significant holdings include the personal libraries of Djuna Barnes and Katherine Anne Porter, the Rose and Joseph Pagnani Collection of Girls' Series Books, and works by Louisa May Alcott, Robert Frost, and Ernest Hemingway. Most books can be searched using the University's online catalog.
