Why are the Libraries charging patrons to print and make copies?
The Libraries have a networked pay-for-print solution in order to provide both better quality printing for our patrons and to recover the costs of that printing.
How will I pay for my printing and copying?
Patrons can use Terrapin Express (attached to University ID card) or purchase a Photocopy Card (intended for visitors) to pay for their printing.
Photocopy Cards can be purchased for $1.00 (with $0.20 of pre-encoded value) at 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the Libraries. One of these two cards must be used; the printer stations will not accept cash or credit card.
Please note if you wish you add money to your UMD ID or a visitor card through Terrapin Express or a credit card, you will have to add a minimum of $10. Terrapin Express accounts can be used at all valid locations on campus to pay for other services as well.
What if I need to add money to my card?
- Terrapin Express--You can add money to an existing Terrapin Express account inside the Libraries by inserting cash at the Copy Card ATMs, or online.
- Photocopy Card--You can add money to your balance by inserting cash at any of the 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the Libraries.
How much does printing and copying cost?
It is $.10 each page for black and white, and $.50 each page for color. Additional costs for specialized services are listed below.
What happens if I make a mistake? Will I be charged?
Yes. If you swipe your card at a print station, select a print job, and print it out, your card will be debited. This charge is non-refundable. Therefore, it is best to avoid mistakes by previewing your work, using the browser or program's "Print Preview" capability before sending it to the print queue. It is your responsibility to do so to determine if there are problems.
What do I do if the printer or copier doesn't work?
Don't hesitate to ask for help at the Library Services Desk.
How can I get my research results without having to pay for them?
Most databases allow you to e-mail your results to yourself or to download them as PDFs.
How can I make suggestions on making the system work better?
Many of the Libraries have suggestion boxes for your ideas. If there is no box, please feel free to write out your suggestions and give them to personnel at the Service Desk in the library you are using.
