Welcome to the UMD Libraries' New Website!

Copy, Print, and Scan

Black and White printers, copiers, and scanners are available at all libraries on campus.

Color printers are only in McKeldin Library (Floors 1, 2, 4), the STEM Library, and the Art Library.

Open your document and Select File > Print.

Choose the printer associated with the library you are visiting and preferred print type suffix Color/BW (Ex. McKeldinBW) and select "Print".

You'll need to name your print job so you can find it at the printer.

Swipe your activated payment card (Student ID with Terrapin Express or Copy Card) on a library printer to release the print job.

Print type Cost
Black and white (1-sided) 10¢ per sheet
Black and white (2-sided) 14¢ per sheet (7¢ per side)
Color (1-sided) 50¢ per sheet
Color (2-sided) 70¢ per sheet (35¢ per side)

Don't delay, print jobs left for too long are automatically deleted from the print server and cannot be retrieved.

Please contact us if you have any questions or problems.

UMD students, faculty and staff may send print jobs from personal or office computers to the Libraries' printers from anywhere on campus as long as they are connected to the eduroam wireless network (UMD-Guest does not connect to our printers).

To do so, download and install the appropriate print drivers.

  • Drivers for 32bit Windows: LibrariesMobilePrint_for_W2K.exe
  • Drivers for 64bit Windows: LibrariesMobilePrint_for_x64.exe
  • Drivers for Mac OS X: LibrariesMobileprint.dmg

Once drivers are installed, you should notice that you have many new printers available to you.

Choose the printer associated with the library you are visiting and preferred print type suffix Color/BW (Ex. McKeldinMobileBW) and select "Print".

You'll need to name your print job so you can find it at the printer.

Swipe your activated payment card (Student ID with Terrapin Express or Copy Card) on a library printer to release the print job.

Special Format Printing

Poster printing is available on the 2nd floor of McKeldin Library, where we have HP Large Format Printers which are capable of creating prints up to 42 inches wide. The printers are loaded with HP Universal Bond Glossy Paper, 80gsm but we can also accommodate custom paper if you supply it. When it comes to staging your print job, we suggest using the free tool Foxit PDF reader, since that has been demonstrated to give the best results.

Please note: We do not issue refunds for improperly formatted posters, so make sure that your document or image is set to the size you want to print! If you'd like to make an appointment with us to discuss your print job, please email us.

Why are the Libraries charging patrons to print and make copies?

The Libraries have a networked pay-for-print solution in order to provide both better quality printing for our patrons and to recover the costs of that printing.

How will I pay for my printing and copying?

Patrons can use Terrapin Express (attached to University ID card) or purchase a Photocopy Card (intended for visitors) to pay for their printing.

Photocopy Cards can be purchased for $1.00 (with $0.20 of pre-encoded value) at 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the Libraries. One of these two cards must be used; the printer stations will not accept cash or credit card.

Please note if you wish you add money to your UMD ID or a visitor card through Terrapin Express or a credit card, you will have to add a minimum of $10. Terrapin Express accounts can be used at all valid locations on campus to pay for other services as well.

What if I need to add money to my card?

  • Terrapin Express--You can add money to an existing Terrapin Express account inside the Libraries by inserting cash at the Copy Card ATMs, or online.
  • Photocopy Card--You can add money to your balance by inserting cash at any of the 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the Libraries.

How much does printing and copying cost?

It is $.10 each page for black and white, and $.50 each page for color. Additional costs for specialized services are listed below.

What happens if I make a mistake? Will I be charged?

Yes. If you swipe your card at a print station, select a print job, and print it out, your card will be debited. This charge is non-refundable. Therefore, it is best to avoid mistakes by previewing your work, using the browser or program's "Print Preview" capability before sending it to the print queue. It is your responsibility to do so to determine if there are problems.

What do I do if the printer or copier doesn't work?

Don't hesitate to ask for help at the Library Services Desk.

How can I get my research results without having to pay for them?

Most databases allow you to e-mail your results to yourself or to download them as PDFs.

How can I make suggestions on making the system work better?

Many of the Libraries have suggestion boxes for your ideas. If there is no box, please feel free to write out your suggestions and give them to personnel at the Service Desk in the library you are using.

Payment Options

Current Students, Faculty and Staff are encouraged to open a Terrapin Express account.

  • Terrapin Express can be used at all photocopiers and library print stations.
  • Value can be added with cash in person or with credit/debit card online (online minimum - $10.00).
  • Terrapin Express is tied to your UMD ID card so you don't need another card.
