The front (east) wing of the 2nd floor of McKeldin Library will be closed during winter term, beginning Tuesday, January 2, through Tuesday, January 23, to allow the space to be repainted. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

UMD Libraries now offers access to the New York Times

UMD students, faculty, and staff can say goodbye to monthly article limits on New York Times digital content. UMD Libraries now offers access to the New York Times to all current students, faculty, and staff, with the New York Times Academic Pass. The Academic Pass provides digital access to all New York Times online content including news from NYTimes.com, The New York Times in Higher Education, NYT Cooking and Games (including the NYT Crossword and Wordle), The Athletic, and Wirecutter.

NEH Awards $322,532 to UMD Libraries for Historic Maryland Newspaper Digitization

The University of Maryland (UMD) Libraries was awarded a $322,532 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to support an ongoing collaborative effort to digitize historic Maryland newspapers published before 1964.

UMD Libraries invites community to opening reception for new “Rising Up!” exhibition

UMD Libraries is excited to announce the “Rising Up: 100 Years of Student Activism for Justice and Civil Rights at the University of Maryland” exhibition in Hornbake Library. To celebrate, join us on Wednesday, October 25, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for an opening reception. Meet the exhibition’s curators, hear from speakers who will share experiences about their struggle for civil rights and social justice, and take a guided tour of the exhibit.

UMD Libraries expands LGBTQIA+ literature collection

The University of Maryland Libraries is pleased to announce an expansion of our LGBTQIA+ English literature collections with 170 new titles of transgender and bisexual fiction and poetry. In the face of rising book bans and challenges that disproportionately target LGBTQIA+ literature, UMD Libraries is committed to continually evaluating and expanding this collection to ensure a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and voices are reflected in the Libraries’ collections.

UMD Libraries Provides Launching Pad for Research-Driven Student Podcast

A group of undergraduate students have created a limited podcast series using archives from the Hornbake Library. The series, With Love & Struggle—researched and written by Janete Amaya, Hannah Bray, Maliyah Daniels, Ashley Mazur, Katherine Guerrero Rivera, Viviane Stackhouse, and Fibee Ybanez—dives into the Libraries’ archival collection of Off Our Backs, an underground feminist magazine that ran from 1970 to 2008.

UMD Libraries to Host Virtual Panel on Intellectual Freedom

The University of Maryland Libraries will host a virtual dialogue on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, from 3:00-4:30 pm ET, to explore actions that can be taken to ensure libraries remain bastions of intellectual freedom for all.American librarians are increasingly becoming the latest targets in the political and cultural wars spreading across the country, part of a growing movement to ban books, censor ideas, and restrict educators’ ability to discuss race, gender, identity, and LGBTQ+ issues in the classroom.
