Code of Conduct
Ensuring a pleasant and productive environment for all requires that each user follow this Code of Conduct.
By entering any campus library you agree to refrain from:
- Creating any disturbance or exhibiting any behavior that interferes with normal use of the libraries. This includes, but is not limited to: rowdiness, noise, sleeping, use of cellular telephones, and wearing or riding roller blades or skateboards. Bicycles are not permitted in library buildings. Audible rings for mobile phones should be turned off while owners are in the University Libraries. Mobile phones may be used in vestibules or lobbies of library buildings.
- Consuming food or beverages in library areas where they are prohibited. Food and beverages are allowed in McKeldin Library, STEM Library, and Priddy Library at the Universities of Shady Grove. Food is prohibited in the Architecture, Art, Hornbake, and Performing Arts Libraries.
- Smoking or use of any tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, in the University Libraries.
- Removing or attempting to remove library materials or property without checking them out or without authorization.
- Failing to return materials following the expiration of the loan period and/or on request for return of materials by the University Libraries.
- Failing to pay the University Libraries the value of lost or damaged materials.
- Concealing or relocating library materials in the University Libraries for the exclusive use of an individual or group.
- Mutilating library materials by marking, underlining, removing pages or portions of pages, removing binding, removing electronic theft detection devices or barcodes, or in any other way defacing library materials.
- Altering computer settings, software or peripherals. Please see the university's Policy on Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources for further information.
- Harassing library staff or patrons.
- Being in an unauthorized area of the University Libraries, remaining in a library after closing or when requested to leave during emergency situations or drills.
- Bringing pets into any library, except helper animals.
By entering any campus library you also agree to comply with all federal, state, and other applicable laws, all applicable university rules, and policies, and all applicable contracts and licenses.
