UMD Libraries is excited to announce the “Rising Up: 100 Years of Student Activism for Justice and Civil Rights at the University of Maryland” exhibition in Hornbake Library. To celebrate, join us on Wednesday, October 25, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for an opening reception. Meet the exhibition’s curators, hear from speakers who will share experiences about their struggle for civil rights and social justice, and take a guided tour of the exhibit.
UMD Libraries expands LGBTQIA+ literature collection
The University of Maryland Libraries is pleased to announce an expansion of our LGBTQIA+ English literature collections with 170 new titles of transgender and bisexual fiction and poetry. In the face of rising book bans and challenges that disproportionately target LGBTQIA+ literature, UMD Libraries is committed to continually evaluating and expanding this collection to ensure a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and voices are reflected in the Libraries’ collections.
University of Maryland Libraries announces the online launch of the “Advancing Workers’ Rights” digital collection
The University of Maryland Libraries announces the debut of a significant, newly digitized collection, making available online for the first time tens of thousands of records documenting the intersection of the labor and civil rights movements in the United States. Featuring materials from the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO)’s National Office and Southeast Division, these records are held respectively by the University of Maryland (UMD) and Georgia State University (GSU).
UMD Libraries Provides Launching Pad for Research-Driven Student Podcast
A group of undergraduate students have created a limited podcast series using archives from the Hornbake Library. The series, With Love & Struggle—researched and written by Janete Amaya, Hannah Bray, Maliyah Daniels, Ashley Mazur, Katherine Guerrero Rivera, Viviane Stackhouse, and Fibee Ybanez—dives into the Libraries’ archival collection of Off Our Backs, an underground feminist magazine that ran from 1970 to 2008.
Big Ten Open Books Project Launches First Collection
In partnership with six member university presses, the University Libraries of the Big Ten Academic Alliance announce the launch of the Big Ten Open Books Project, a collaboration between the university presses and libraries of the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
TOME@UMD Now Accepting Applications for Open Access Publishing Grants
TOME@UMD, a program of the national TOME initiative, is now accepting applications for four grants of up to $15,000 each that will sponsor the publication of open access, digital monographs by UMD faculty members. In addition, TOME@UMD will fund the open access publication of two previously published monographs up to $5,500 each. With a deadline of October 16, 2023, the process calls for an Expression of Interest from eligible faculty in all disciplines, but with preference given for those in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Natalie Trapuzzano promoted to UMD Libraries’ University Archivist
The UMD Libraries is pleased to announce that Natalie Trapuzzano has been named University Archivist in Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA). Trapuzzano had been serving as the Assistant University Archivist for UMD Libraries since June 2022.
